Champ: My Story of Survival is a new eBook from award-winning children’s author Fiona Ingram, the sales of which will go towards raising funds and awareness for animal abuse charity, S.A.F.E. Rescue in California. The book chronicles the story of Champ, a brave dog whose recovery from heinous, near-fatal injuries has drawn attention from all around the world.
The book provides a mix of content, including accounts of Champ’s recovery, a children’s story starring the plucky canine as a superhero, a poem from the dog himself, a host of pictures, some of the very best messages from the fans who followed Champ’s recovery and more. Moved by both the tragedy and hopefulness of Champ’s story, Fiona Ingram has teamed up with S.A.F.E Rescue to pen an account that raises awareness at the same time as providing much needed funds for the organization that saved Champ’s life and gave him a safe haven.
Founded in 2007, S.A.F.E. is a non-profit animal rescue charity dedicated to providing homes for ‘sick, injured, overlooked and forgotten dogs’ who would otherwise never make it out of the shelter. S.A.F.E. is run entirely by volunteers and relies on donations from the public. With a small but dedicated permanent staff of three, and ten foster homes, they’re doing great work with meagre resources. S.A.F.E. focuses on ill dogs as the attendant medical bills make them far less likely to find adoptive homes.
All funds from the sale of Champ: My Story of Survival will go to S.A.F.E, with 100% of all donations going directly to the care of the animals.
Daniel Slaton of Westlake Village Animal Hospital says:
There are so many animals out there that are being put to sleep, and there are not a lot of people willing to spend time, energy, and money to get these pets healthy enough to find them homes. There’s a need in every community for an organization like this and people like them.
Nate is yet another example of the wonderful work performed by S.A.F.E Rescue.
Kelli Hopper from S.A.F.E. Rescue says:
Nate is an example of a dog (without much hope) being given a chance at life. His owners broke his back when he was 8 weeks old. He was then confiscated by animal control and held as evidence. The day he was released we got him. He was completely paralyzed in his back legs. He now has a rod down his spine for stability and his spine is wired together. He gained a lot of mobility back in his legs, but not all, and it left him incontinent. People were interested in him because they thought it would be cute to have a dog in a cart. But most people would leave him in a crate all day because his injuries left him incontinent. I kept him and he has free run of the house like my other dogs do. I just have tiles!
Fiona Ingram is the writer of The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, part of the Chronicles of the Stone series. Previously a gold award winner for pre-teen mystery fiction at 2011 Children’s Literary Classics Awards and owner of a gold medal from the 2013 Wise Bear Book Awards, Fiona is a passionate animal rights advocate. Working with organizations in the USA, Fiji and Indonesia, Fiona came across Champ’s story on Facebook, where his recovery has been the subject of a large online following.
Fiona’s account of Champ’s struggle is candid, appropriate to a book designed to raise awareness about the need to support animal rights, but focuses on Champ as a determined, irrepressibly affectionate character. His paw prints are all over the book, from the introduction to the poem and the fiction story, and so it’s fair that he’s been given an author’s credit alongside Fiona.
How Superdog Champ Saved the Day! is a fun children’s story in which the dog foils kidnappers with the aid of some helpful chickens, while Champ’s Fan Mail collects accounts from Champ’s huge online following detailing how his story has influenced their own lives. Champ’s Story follows him from his harrowing delivery at West Valley Animal Shelter, through the ups and downs of recovery, to ‘a big fluffy bed, very soft blankets, 3 human foster family members, 3 dogs, 6 chickens, 1 bunny, and 1 hamster.’
Standoutbooks is thrilled for the opportunity to support S.A.F.E. Rescue and bring such a good cause to your attention. Champ’s book is available as an ebook on Amazon and costs just $2.99. Every cent from each sale will go to S.A.F.E. Rescue in California to help more dogs recover and have a chance at a better life.
